Programme Objectives
The Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science programme is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge, skills, and competencies required for progression to Diploma-level training in Medical Laboratory Science. Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of the basic theoretical principles and concepts of Medical Laboratory Science.
- Perform basic laboratory procedures and techniques under appropriate supervision in accordance with established standards and protocols.
- Apply fundamental scientific knowledge and laboratory skills to support diagnostic laboratory services.
- Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and effective communication within healthcare and laboratory settings.
- Develop the academic foundation and practical competencies necessary for successful progression into an accredited Diploma programme in Medical Laboratory Science.
Admission Requirements
Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
The minimum requirements for admission to the Certificate programme are passes in three (3) core subjects and three (3) elective subjects.
SSSCE Candidates
Credit Passes (A-E) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, Integrated Science, Mathematics or Social Studies, plus any three (3) elective subjects.
WASSCE Candidates
Credit Passes (A1-E8) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, Integrated Science, Mathematics or Social Studies, plus any three (3) elective subjects.
Advanced Level Applicants
GCE candidates must possess five (5) passes at the Ordinary Level Examination or its equivalent, including English Language and Mathematics. In addition, candidates must obtain three (3) passes at the Advanced Level Examination or its equivalent and a pass in General Paper.
Mature Applicants
Mature applicants must be at least twenty-five (25) years of age and possess five (5) GCE Ordinary Level passes or six (6) WASSCE/SSSCE passes, including English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies. Applicants must also pass an interview conducted by the College.
Foreign Applicants
All foreign qualifications shall be referred to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for determination of equivalence and eligibility for admission.
Applicants from non-English-speaking countries shall be required to provide evidence of proficiency in the English Language.
Important Notice
In accordance with the policy directive of the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC), the Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science programme serves as an access pathway to Diploma-level training.
Graduates of the Certificate programme are not eligible to sit for the AHPC Licensure Examination and are not eligible for professional registration based on the Certificate qualification alone. Students must progress to and successfully complete an accredited Diploma programme in Medical Laboratory Science before becoming eligible for licensure and registration.
Requirements for Graduation
To qualify for the award of the Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science, students must:
- Pass all prescribed courses in accordance with Miezah University College academic regulations.
- Satisfy all credit requirements of the programme.
- Pass all required examinations and assessments prescribed by the College.
- Meet all attendance requirements and any additional graduation requirements prescribed by the College.
- Attend a minimum of ninety percent (90%) of both theory and practical sessions.
Award of Certificate
Successful completion of the programme shall lead to the award of a Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science and eligibility for progression into an accredited Diploma programme in Medical Laboratory Science.

Progression Opportunities
Graduates may progress to an accredited Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science subject to meeting the admission and progression requirements of the receiving institution.

The Certificate qualification provides foundational preparation for further studies in Medical Laboratory Science. Graduates are expected to continue into Diploma-level training before becoming eligible for professional licensure and practice.
